<p>Many times in my over twenty years as a personal trainer, I have seen clients make awesome progress with regard to following the customized eating plan I give them only to become complacent and slip back into the unhealthy dietary habits that brought them to the point of desperation. The question is how do we maintain the mindset that created success with regard to<span id="more-2383"></span> weight loss. The answer is that we must unswervingly focus on the end goal we established when we began on the program. Let&#8217;s say a client comes to me who weighs two-hundred and fifty pounds and he desires to take his weight down to two hundred pounds. The client, in order to remain motivated, must constantly, reaffirm the commitment he originally made to drop his weight to two hundred pounds.</p>
<p>I firmly believe in using weight loss related mantras in order to stay motivated. The question is what is a mantra? A mantra is a constantly repeated saying which will affirm the client&#8217;s goals until the mantra becomes a part of the client&#8217;s belief system. Is this brainwashing? Maybe, but for thousands of years this has been a method which has been used in religion and in education to form belief systems and ingrain powerful and useful truths. In their spare time, I instruct my clients to constantly repeat the success mantra until it becomes such a part of them that nothing could stop them from achieving their weight loss goal.</p>
<p>Another power technique involves obtaining a picture of a body which is representative of what the client&#8217;s end goal is regarding appearance. Every day that picture should be looked at, and I instruct the client to spend one half hour creating a mental picture of themselves with this goal body. This technique is called visualization and if practiced with regularity will never fail to aid in the quest to remain motivated.</p>
<p>In order achieve success in their fitness program it is necessary for the client to dedicate themselves in totality in achieving their goals. Success only comes when a person dedicates themselves unreservedly in the pursuit of their goal. No negative self talk can be tolerated; examples of this would be &#8220;I have never been able to go more than two weeks on a weight loss diet,&#8221; or &#8220;I will always be fat,&#8221; statements such as these are the exact opposite of the success mantra described previously in this article. Success mantras, if diligently practiced, will drown out negative self talk. Negative self talk is the number one enemy of program success and must be overcome by diligent practice of the techniques mentioned previously in this article.</p>
<p>Success is a certainty if motivation is maintained and I hope the motivational techniques mentioned in this article will enable you to achieve success in your weight loss endeavor.</p>

<p>The B-vitamins actually consist of 8 separate vitamins that each play important roles in cell metabolism. In general there is B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folic acid), B12 (cobalamins). Phew, quite a list!</p>

<p>Most people understand that it is wise to limit the amount of fat grams in their daily diet.  The dietary reference intake amount for an adult ranges from 20% to 35%[i] of daily calories; or about 44 to 55 grams per day[1].  Since a single slice of pecan pie carries with it 27 grams of fat, and<span id="more-2379"></span> a mere tablespoon of thousand island salad dressing contains 8 grams of fat[ii], it is not surprising to see more and more people checking food labels and &#8220;passing over&#8221; an order of onion rings[2] as they try to lose, or maintain, inches and pounds.
<p>However, the relentless avoidance of fat &#8211; even of healthy unsaturated fat &#8211; is creating a troubling scenario for many individuals.  Instead of losing weight when they go &#8220;fat free&#8221;, they are actually gaining weight.</p>
<p>Many people on the road to weight loss forget &#8211; or simply do not know &#8211; that the words &#8220;fat free&#8221; do not also mean &#8220;calorie free&#8221;.  As a result, many people ingest far too much &#8220;fat free&#8221; food, believing that it will not add weight, since, alas, it is dubbed &#8220;fat free&#8221;.  Yet it is the calories in these fat-free foods that cause the weight gain; not the fat grams themselves[iii].  </p>
<p>A single gram of fat contain nine calories, which is more than double the amount of calories in a gram protein or carbohydrate.  Therefore, mathematically speaking, an eater can consume twice as many protein or carbohydrate grams than fat grams, and achieve the same caloric intake.  Since many high-fat foods contain an excessive amount of fat grams &#8211; such as onion rings &#8211; it has become a staple of dieting wisdom to reduce fat intake and avoid such oily, greasy foods[3].  </p>
<p>Yet it bears repeating that the reason to avoid fat-rich foods is not because of the word &#8220;fat&#8221;; it is because each fat gram contains a scale-tipping 9 calories.  In other words: the weight-conscious reason for avoiding excess fat grams is because it leads to a higher caloric intake.</p>
<p>Dieters who neglect to realize this basic nutritional fact &#8211; that weight gain is about calories and not about fat grams themselves &#8211; fail to realize, and often at their eventual dismay, how the body actually gains and loses weight.  </p>
<p>The typical adult male American diet calls for 2000 calories per day because this is how many calories are collectively use and burned (i.e. converted into energy) by the body each day.  As an example, an average male dieter who consumes 1800 calories a day will &#8220;save&#8221; 200 calories per day.  As there are 3,500 calories in a pound, the dieter in this scenario will &#8220;save&#8221; 3,600 calories over the course of 18 days (18 x 200 calories). This translates into a loss of one pound.  Similarly, if this dieter consumes an excess 200 calories per day, a pound of weight will be gained in 18 days. </p>
<p>A dieter who is not aware of this mathematical formula may indeed avoid fat altogether and consume, for example, 6 tablespoons of &#8220;fat free&#8221; caramel topping per day; believing that this is not a part of the weight gain equation, because it is labeled as &#8220;fat free&#8221;.  This is not false advertising, as fat free caramel topping contains no fat grams. However, fat free caramel topping delivers 103 calories per two tablespoon serving[iv].  </p>
<p>If this dieter is adhering to a diet regimen of 44 fat grams per day &#8212; and does not count calories &#8212; then he will simply not know that in these 6 mere tablespoons are a substantial 309 calories; or 15% of the total daily caloric intake for a 2000 calorie/day diet.</p>
<p>In fact, a dieter could subsist entirely on &#8220;fat free&#8221; foods, and easily exceed their target daily caloric intake by their second meal of the day.  These excess calories are obviously not deriving from fat grams; but they are coming from another source, most probably carbohydrates.  </p>
<p>Again, the message here that many dieters do not receive from the advertising and marketing media is that fat grams in and of themselves do not necessarily &#8220;cause&#8221; weight gain.  Rather, fat grams contribute to the total caloric intake, and they should be counted alongside carbohydrates and proteins. </p>
<p>Adding an unnecessary layer of complexity here is that many &#8220;healthy foods&#8221;, such as energy bars, contain an excessive amount of calories.  A chocolate chip Energy Bar&#8482;, for example, contains 230 calories; which is actually only 40 calories less than a Butterfinger&#8482; candy bar[v].  Unfortunately, because the Energy Bar contains 2 grams of fat and is therefore &#8220;low fat&#8221;, some dieters eat several per day; and pack on 230 calories each time, despite the fact that virtually none of those calories come from fat.  It does not matter; the dieter will still gain weight if his or her daily caloric intake threshold is surpassed.  Dieters who expect yogurt-covered bars to be &#8220;healthier&#8221; are also misled; the yogurt-berry Balance Bar&#212; contains 200 calories per serving, despite the fact that only 25% of the calories come from its 6 grams of fat.</p>
<p>However, there are some responsible nutritional supplement products on the market that are engineered to be both low fat/fat-free and low-calorie.  These foods are of benefit to dieters when they are losing weight, and also in the vulnerable period after the weight has been lost.  Regrettably, many very well intentioned dieters who have made tremendous strides and sacrifices to lose weight regain it within the first few &#8220;post-diet&#8221; months.  While a number of factors influence whether a dieter will regain weight, including environment and genetics, one major culprit is that dieters are not provided with low-fat, low-calorie, and palatable food sources once they have achieved their weight loss goals.  They consequently return to previous eating habits, and the unwanted weight returns within weeks.</p>
<p>However, as mentioned, there are intelligent nutritional supplements on the market that do fill this void, and ethically serve dieters &#8211; and post-dieters &#8211; with foods that they need to stay healthy, and fend off weight gain.  For the sake of current and future dieters who are going to struggle with misleading &#8220;fat free&#8221; marketing, it is hoped that such intelligent companies, and their products, quickly become the norm of the future, rather than the exception of today.  </p>

<p>[3] As briefly noted above, many dieters fail to realize that there are healthy unsaturated fats that the body requires; the body cannot produce fat on its own, it must receive it through diet. <p>A primary member of the B vitamin family, Inositol is a compound that occurs in the eyes, kidney, liver, muscles, and the brain. A lack of Inositol in one&#8217;s diet can lead to the emergence of bald spots. Some studies have also shown that a deficiency of this supplement has a direr effect on males as they lost twice as much hair compared to their female counterparts. Some doctors prescribe this supplement to their patients and results can be evident as soon as one month after taking the medication. One of the other non-hair benefits of Inostisol is its ability to bring down the blood pressure of patients.</p>

<p>
Leptin leapt into the headlines when it was identified in 1995 as a protein that triggers weight loss in mice. Leptin (the Greek term for thin) is a hormone released by your fat cells. When you lose fat, leptin levels drop and when you gain fat, leptin levels rise.</p>
<p>Recent research into leptin has revealed what is likely to be very important in the control of appetite,<span id="more-2376"></span> weight loss and the regulation of body weight. Advances in leptin research and its role in the control of obesity would lead to reductions in diabetes, coronary heart disease and many forms of cancer, all of which are increased in obesity.</p>
<p>American adults are overweight and more than 30 percent are obese. Currently 50 million Americans suffer from metabolic syndrome &#8211; a disease associated with obesity and encompassing coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes. </p>
<p>Leptin affects our weight and our appetites. Levels of leptin rise just before a meal and fall when people are full. It is now known that leptin not only can affect the chemical responses that affect how hungry you are but also can affect the wiring of your brain.</p>
<p>Scientists are interested in whether leptin may be manipulated to help people, especially overweight people, to lose weight and not put it back on. They know that leptin is released by fat cells and tells the brain how much fat is on the body. Once leptin has been secreted by your fat cells, it travels to the hypothalamus. This is the part of your brain that controls eating behavior.</p>
<p>Defects in leptin signaling leads to obesity, overeating, and decreased energy output.</p>
<p>Normally, when leptin levels in the blood go up, the brain signals us to stop eating. But since obesity isn&#8217;t the result of a lack of leptin, it is a lack of response to leptin, and obese individuals tend to have more and larger leptin-producing fat cells than thinner people, their leptin levels increase substantially with every pound of additional weight gain. This is illustrated below. </p>
<p>Mice lacking leptin ate voraciously and grew enormously fat; leptin injections made them stop eating and slim down. The discovery led researchers to think that fat people might also lack leptin, and that it could make them lose weight. But it was not so. Scientists found that most fat people had lots of leptin, and giving them more had little effect. (The New York Times 26/11/2002).</p>
<p>Researchers at the Oregon National Primate Research Center conducted a study in mice involving two separate groups that were fed high-fat and low-fat diets. The high-fat diet group developed symptoms of diabetes and obesity while the low-fat diet group did not. The researchers tested cells which conduct nerve impulses and found the cells behaved as if there was no leptin present, even though levels were 40-times higher than in normal mice. (Cell Metab. 2007 Mar;5(3):181-94).</p>
<p>This is due to obese people becoming resistant to leptin&#8217;s signal. When the brain fails to sense the leptin hormone&#8217;s signal correctly it thinks that more fat is required, even though we have enough, and fat begins to accumulate while metabolism slows down. Some scientists think that either leptin is not transported through the blood-brain barrier properly or the brain is not interpreting the signals properly.</p>
<p>With the regular discovery of hormones involved in regulating body weight it is a diverse and rapidly expanding field.</p>
<p>My own research of the literature has revealed to me some dietary factors that block leptin from crossing the blood-brain barrier and interfere with leptin signaling. In addition, there are foods/methods that correct these problems. I will discuss these issues in due course.</p>

<p>Fiber supplements can be tremendously beneficial for IBS sufferers. Although supplements such as Metamucil and Citrucel are generally marketed as laxatives, and are very useful for constipation sufferers, they can also be used to combat diarrhea because they add bulk to the diet and can make<span id="more-2375"></span> waste food more solid.
<p>These supplements are not really medications &#8211; most are simply fiber products with no added drugs or herbs, and so they can be taken long term on a daily basis without worrying about side effects. They&#8217;re just the equivalent of adding lots of fruit and bran to your diet, but without having to eat daily apples or worry about bloating from the bran. </p>
<p>Do check, though, that the supplement you choose is just made up of fiber and nothing more, as you will occasionally find one that has added chemical laxatives or other ingredients that can upset your stomach.</p>
<p>It is important to make sure you find the fiber supplement that&#8217;s right for you, as IBS sufferers often have very sensitive stomachs. Some people find that the psyllium fiber in supplements such as Metamucil can irritate their intestines, so if that happens to you try one of the methylcellulose products such as Citrucel, or other types of fiber such as acacia fiber.</p>
<p>Another point to be aware of is that some manufacturers use artificial sweeteners in their products, and these can sometimes cause problems for IBS sufferers. There should be a normal, sweetener-free version to choose instead, and the amount of sugar in a few spoonfuls should not have a huge impact on any diet you are on.</p>
<p>Whatever type of fiber you choose, you must make sure to build the dosage up gradually. If you add masses of fiber to your diet all at once you will probably feel very gassy and bloated. Instead, try just a small spoon of fiber once a day and build up to the recommended dose on the label. Most supplements will recommend that you take the product with lots of water, and to make sure you are drinking enough water for the rest of the day as well.</p>
<p>It will take a little while before you see the effects of the supplement, so don&#8217;t give up if you don&#8217;t feel better after a few days. Try taking a supplement for one or two weeks to really give it time to work.</p>
<p>These days there are many different ways to take fiber supplements. You can buy the traditional powder form, which is swallowed with water or soft food, or you can buy wafers, tablets or capsules, which can be very handy if you need to travel and don&#8217;t want to carry a whole can of fiber with you.</p>
<p>Most people prefer to take one dose of fiber in the early morning, perhaps with their breakfast, and then another with dinner or just before their evening meal. You will need to experiment to find the right dosage for your symptoms and the best time to take the fiber, but if you can find a supplement and dose that works for you it will be well worth the effort, because you will have found a cheap, drug-free way to help keep your IBS under control.</p>

<p>He&#8217;d never once given a thought<span id="more-2374"></span> to his hair because it was always there. Aside from his regular trims every six weeks to keep his hair looking short and tight (except for the front which he liked to spike up, down and to the side depending on the occasion) he hardly bothered with it. He bought one bottle 2-in 1 shampoo/conditioner, washed his hair during every shower, and rubbed it dry with a towel. He was never the type to even know what hair transplant surgery or a hair transplant even was; that&#8217;s how far out of the realm of his life it was. Anyway, wasn&#8217;t he too young to even think about hair transplant surgery?</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why it was so strange that one day when he woke up in the morning, he noticed a couple of longish hairs on his pillow and another two hairs on his shirt that morning. But when he checked the mirror, everything looked ok. But then it happened the next day, the next after that and the day after that. Soon, every day he was losing a few more noticeable hairs and when he went to look in the mirror two months later half of his long bangs were gone! When he spiked them up or backward his hairline had receded. He couldn&#8217;t believe it.</p>
<p>Wasn&#8217;t he too young for Male Pattern Baldness? Well he hit the Internet researching hair loss conditions and hair loss solutions and read all about Male Pattern Baldness. He learned that it can happen to men as young as he was and even younger and that your propensity for hair loss and pattern baldness is mostly determined by the genetics on your mother&#8217;s side of the family. <p>He also learned hair transplants are a good option for younger men with active lifestyles with smaller areas to fill in around the hairline and that a Hair Transplant Surgery could be done in a day. Now that&#8217;s something he was interested in: the instant gratification of hair transplant surgery, even though he understood it might take 3-6 months before the hair transplant grew in. The coolest thing Paul came to understand is that hair transplant surgery is based on the theory of &#8220;Donor Dominance&#8221; which states that hair&#8217;s genetic code lies within each hair follicle and not in the transplanted recipient area, which is the basis for the success of a hair transplant surgery. Each hair follicle just grows where you put it, much like transplanting a bush with the roots attached to it. </p>
<p>Paul definitely did not want to buzz his hair bald, or wear any kind of hair system. Instead, he wanted it to look totally natural and hair transplant surgery was the choice for him because he didn&#8217;t want anybody to realize he was losing his hair &#8211; instead he just wanted to hit the ground running with his own hair back where it belonged &#8211; and that&#8217;s exactly what hair transplant surgery was going to give him.</p>
