Liquid Vs. Tablet Vitamins

The argument of liquid vs. tablet vitamins is best discussed against background knowledge of exactly what vitamins are and how they are assimilated into the body. The popularity of pills or capsules is basically due to their convenience and taste, but are the vitamins in a convenient form for the body to be able use efficiently?

Vitamins are essential chemicals that take part in the chemical reactions of the body, and allow the processes of life to occur. They are not the bricks that build the body, but the substances that allow the bricks to be made and that allow the body to function as an organism. Without them there would be no human life so a regular intake of vitamins is essential.

If you eat a good balanced diet then you will generally have a good and adequate intake of vitamins. However, few people belong to this group since most people do not have a balanced diet. Vegans, for example, cannot get Vitamin B12 from their diet, and therefore require a supplement. Pregnant women need a good intake of vitamins, and the aged are particularly susceptible to vitamin deficiencies.

A typical diet of burgers and fast foods can lead to a vitamin deficiency, and again supplements are required by people who eat this typical ‘American diet’. The result of a vitamin deficiency is a general slowing down of the body’s chemical processes and metabolism, premature aging and the gradual appearance of specific conditions affecting the skin, the blood and other parts and organs of the body. For many, therefore, vitamin supplements are necessary to ensure proper nutrition.

Some vitamins, such as vitamin C, folic acid and the various B vitamins are soluble in water and others are oil or fat soluble. The water soluble vitamins are flushed out of the body and must be regularly replaced while the fat soluble ones are stored by the body until needed. This presents us with the first problem: how often do we need to ingest each type of vitamin?

A dietician will be able to provide you with that information, though each person’s requirements are different, depending on age, sex, normal diet and any disability they might have. If you are in doubt, then commercial vitamin supplements are specifically balanced to provide an average amount of water and fat soluble vitamins as determined by the health authority of your country, and is called the Recommended Daily Allowance, or RDA. There is no world-wide RDA, each authority making its own recommendations.

It is very important that these vitamins are taken regularly and not intermittently. They are not medicines but regular doses of substances essential for life, and as such should be taken at regular periods. The recommended doses are linked to the RDA of each vitamin, and work best when taken for extended periods. A one-off dose will do little for you but regular doses over several weeks and months will make a difference to your general health and the way you age.

Early vitamin supplements were generally not so much in the form of specific vitamins or mixtures, but of food sources known to be good for you. Castor oil and cod liver oil were good vitamin sources, and the vitamin supplement was taken in a natural form. Through time, tablets became popular due to their convenience, and capsules assumed popularity due to the taste of some unpopular forms of supplement such as the castor and cod liver oil many of us remember with distaste.

Malt was also a popular supplement, especially in the 1940s and 50s when post war diets tended to be poor. Malt was an excellent source of the B vitamins, beta carotene and folic acid. It is generally accepted that vitamins are more easily assimilated into the body from natural sources than from manufactures sources, and this is one argument in favor of liquid supplements that come in a natural form.

However, there are also liquids that are solutions of water soluble vitamins such as vitamin C, and others that are solutions of multivitamins. The oil soluble vitamins are present in these liquid supplements in colloidal or emulsion form; that is, they are present as a suspension of very small particles in the carrier liquid.

The argument for liquids is that they are more easily absorbed by the intestine into the body than solid pills. However, nutrients are absorbed into the body early on in the intestinal tract, and liquids pass through the body relatively quickly. How do we know that the vitamins have time to be fully absorbed? Solids, on the other hand, remain in the intestine for a much longer time. However, it is not the form they are in that is important, but the bioavailability, and liquids are more bioavailable than solids. They are more easily absorbed by the body.

Experts generally agree that it is easier for the body to use vitamins in liquid form than in solid form. Liquids are also welcomed by those who find it difficult to swallow pills, both pills and capsules contain many materials other than the nutrient itself. Tablets contain waxes, fillers and binders to enable the pill to be formed. They can also contain sugars and artificial flavors and colors to make them look and taste more attractive, and other substances to help them break apart after swallowing.

Capsules can be too large for some people to swallow, and even the non-gelatin type can form hard masses in the stomach that can be virtually indigestible. The gelatin capsules have moral significance for vegans and vegetarians and are also difficult to digest.

Soluble or dispersible powders are an alternative to tablets and liquid supplements. The powder can be formulated to contain targeted doses of specific vitamins, unlike most liquids, and are ideal for the water soluble vitamins. With liquids, however, the supplement can be taken in small doses throughout the day which is preferable to one individual table dose.

The choice of liquid vs. tablet vitamins might be a personal one, or one imposed on the 20% of the population that cannot swallow pills, but bioavailability and the natural form of the vitamins concerned should also be taken into consideration. If in doubt, you should check out a reputable vitamin supplement site online and find what recommendations are being made.

One may argue that liquid is better than tablet and vise versa. More information can be found on the website http://vitanetonline.com/ where advice on a wide range of liquid and tablet supplements can be found.

Quantity of the amount of vitamin A is measured in retinol activity equivalents (RAE).

The suggested daily requirement for vitamin A is 700 RAE (retinol activity equivalent) per day for women and 900 RAE per day for men. But the requirements may be different from one person to another. The requirements may differ for growing children, during puberty, and for women who are pregnant or lactating; therefore, it is necessary to consult doctor for differences.

2) It Helps the skin and mucous membranes function as a barrier to bacteria and viruses.

3) It can also help boost the power of your white blood cells

4) It also keeps the mucus membranes, like the ones in your nose, moist.

Food sources of Vitamin A

Eating a range of foods that include vitamin A (and carotenes) is the finest method to get a sufficient amount.

Alcohol, coffee, or excessive iron can all reduce the body’s supply of Vitamin A. But, the good information is that vitamin A is readily obtainable from numerous food sources.

Vitamin A can be obtained from food in two dissimilar forms -

1. Pro-vitamin A (also called beta-carotene). This is obtained from plant sources. It is mostly found in fruits and vegetables.

2. Pre-formed vitamin A (also called retinol or retinal) . This is obtained through animal sources. Main sources consist of liver, whole milk, and some equipped food products.

The top most vitamin A-rich foods consist of:

1) Sweet potato

2) Mango

3) Carrots

4) Spinach

5) Dried apricots

1) Night blindness is one of the first Vitamin A Deficiency symptom

2) Vitamin A deficiency reduces the capability to fight infections, such as pneumonia.

3) Vitamin A Deficiency may increase a child’s threat of developing respiratory infections, diarrhea, decreased growth rate and slow bone development.

Vegans who do not consume eggs and dairy foods need pro vitamin A carotenoids to fulfill their requirement for vitamin A. They should include at least of five servings of fruits and vegetables in their daily diet and habitually choose dark green leafy vegetables and orange and yellow fruits to fulfill suggested amounts of vitamin A.

Storage of Vitamin A -

Vitamins are simply destroyed during food preparation and storage.

1) To get the maximum vitamin possible from food, refrigerate and store milk and grains away from strong light.

2) To retain vitamin A try to supply fruits and vegetables raw whenever possible.

3) Steam vegetables, roast or bake meats in place of frying.

4) If you take vitamin supplements, keep them at room temperature in a dry place that is moisture free.

Vitamin A Overdose

Overdose of vitamin A cause tiredness, sluggishness, severe headache, vomiting, peeling of skin and hair loss.

Research recommends that having more than an average of 1.5mg per day of vitamin A over a lot of years may affect bones and make them more liable to fracture when grow older.

Older people, especially women, are already at danger of osteoporosis. This is where bone compactness reduces and so the risk of fractures grows.

Vitamin C, Sids, Autism And Vaccinations

One in five hundred babies die of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) every year.  It is such a tragedy and the medical community cannot figure out exactly what is causing these healthy infants to die.  In underdeveloped countries, the rates are a staggering, one in two infants will die of SIDS.

In the 1970’s, Australian doctor Archie Kalokerinos decided to research why so many Aboriginal babies were dying of SIDS.  After researching, he determined that many of the Aboriginal people, mothers and babies were severely deficient in vitamin C.  He recognized symptoms of scurvy in the infants that were dying.  Furthermore, he noticed that many of the SIDS victims died very soon after their vaccinations.

Humans are completely reliant on their diets to get vitamin C, which is needed for almost every human process.  Vaccinations are essentially toxic to the body, and without enough vitamin C, can do severe damage.  Vaccines contain a number of ingredients that are known neurotoxins.  Many of the effects of these ingredients have not been studied.  It is suspected that these ingredients damage neurotransmitters and cause neurological disorders in some children.

Dr. Kalokerinos observed infants after they received their vaccinations and noted fever, diarrhea, increasing irritability, arching of the back, and retraction of the legs, all signs of severe vitamin C deficiency.  He decided to start administering vitamin C to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and their children.  The death rate of infants went from 50% to virtually zero.  Many countries have improved their rates of SIDS by administering vitamin C before and after immunizations.

Immunizations save many children from a host of deadly diseases, so they are not all bad.  Efforts are being made worldwide to make our vaccines safer, especially for infants who may be more susceptible to damage.  Vaccinations put a huge stress on the body and require a lot of vitamin C to process the toxins.  Vitamin C also provides a protective barrier over our cells to help keep them safe from the toxins and resulting free radicals of the vaccines.

Another side effect of vaccines is often brain inflammation.  The brain is bathed in toxins that can do damage and alter cellular cycles, mood, concentration, and neurotransmission.  Autopsies of SIDS victims and autistic individuals who have died often show signs of brain inflammation.  Autistic individuals often show signs of chronic brain inflammation and scarring in the brain.  Many symptoms of autism match those of brain inflammation, so further studies need to be done to determine if there is a reaction to immunizations that causes inflammation to stay.

There are still many unanswered questions when it comes to SIDS, autism and vaccinations.  Rates of autism are on the rise and currently affect 1 in 110 children in the US alone, 1 in 70 boys are affected by autism.  SIDS is responsible for roughly 1 in 2,000 infant deaths in the US each year.  Until research catches up with our need to vaccinate and protect our children, we can only take precautions.

Make sure that you get enough vitamin C in your diet if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.  Infant formulas contain vitamin C, but you may want to consult your pediatrician about an appropriate dose of vitamin C supplements for your baby before and after you immunize.  Watch your baby for signs of scurvy, especially after a vaccination.  Many vitamins and supplements can help protect our cells and combat brain inflammation.  Before you buy vitamins, consider the best vitamin C and talk with your doctor about appropriate dosages for you and your baby.
